In efforts to prepare to today's CEO Conference Call, I have really been thinking about what the perception of professionalism is and what it really means to a new online business owner.

Professionalism is defined as the competence or skill expected of a professional.

So how do you as a new online business owner convey a high level of professionalism when just starting out or on a tight budget?

1. Put policies and systems into place.

There is nothing more unprofessional than a business owner who is flying off the cuff. This goes back to creating a solid foundation and a plan for your business before you start engaging with customers and other business owners. Creating policies and a system as to how you will operate will act as a guide and blueprint to how you will handle different situations as they arise. This will also prevent putting yourself into a situation where you don't appear professional because you are acting in the interest of your business instead of your customer or client. It also protects you emotionally and brings some business ethics to your new empire.

2. Communication skills.

How you choose to communicate with your audience and other business owners can make or break you. It can also attract the wrong target market if you aren't careful. Making sure that you are in business mode when communicating with your audience is key. Try your best not to use slang unless it is for promotional purposes. Check for grammatical errors. Stay aware of your body language and your mannerisms while face to face with customer, clients, and peers.

3. Create a consistent brand identity.

You want a brand that is reputable and recognizable. Some of the most successful small businesses are successful because they adopted a consistent brand identity early on and grew from there. This includes all of your aesthetics such as your logo, visuals, graphics, and content. Your audience needs to feel that you know what you are talking about, know about the product you are selling, and how to treat them throughout the process of securing your sale.

We will be going more in depth on these different areas and how you can implement them in your business to create a professional front no matter how new your online business is.
